SSRS #01: Introduction – Sql Server Reporting Services (SSRS)

Hello Friends,

Let’s start with SQL Server Reporting Services Stuffs.SSRS comes in Microsoft Business Intelligence tools.

SSRS is a server based reporting services. It is used to prepare and delivered variety of interacting and printed reports. Reporting services was firstly released in 2004 which is Add-on (i.e. Patch) for SQL Server 2000.After that Reporting services released as part of SQL Server with SQL Server 2005 in 2005.Next version released with some additional features as part of SQL SERVER 2008 and SQL SERVER 2008 R2. Latest version was released with SQL Server 2012.

Reports are defined in Report Definition Language (RDL) which is an XML markup language. Reports can be designed using versions of Microsoft Visual Studio, with the Business Intelligence Projects plug-in (i.e. installed with Sql Server) or with the included Report Builder. RDL Reports can be export in variety of formats including Excel, PDF, CSV, XML, DOC etc. You will find all Versions of SQL SERVER.

SSRS 2005

SSRS 2005 is SQL Server Reporting Services ships with all versions of SQL Server 2005. SSRS allows you to quickly and easily create reports from multiple database sources. The finished reports can be presented directly from the reporting services website, or Windows-based applications. Reports can be exported to multiple formats, including comma delimited text, XML, PDF, Excel.

SSRS 2005 requires IIS to create Virtual Directories to host web service for running and managing the report. Report builder 1.0 released with SSRS 2005 which is used as ad-Hoc reporting tool.

Report Builder 1.0 would only allow the report developer to build reports against report models. Report models are very tightly controlled similar to using a SQL Server view or stored procedure and do not allow the report developer to freely access and directly query tables or directly write T-SQL statements against the data source.

SSRS 2008

In SSRS 2008 includes an advanced report layout structure called Tablix, data-visualization controls for charts and gauges, and a better report-authoring design experience in the Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS). In addition, a new Report Builder 2.0 tool is available to develop ad-hoc reports. First version that support SharePoint integration mode for reports. It provides added support for exporting reports in Microsoft Office Word format and has enhanced rendering to Excel and CSV.

Report Server is no longer hosted in Internet Information Services (IIS) and can independently take care of its networking and memory management needs. The report-processing engine can now do on-demand processing. For example, in a 100-page report, each page layout is computed only when the user actually wants to view the page. A new report-rendering object model provides more consistency in layout and pagination between report-rendering formats.

Report Builder 2.0 supports the full capabilities of SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services. We can create our own dataset; work with data source, Queries etc. which was not supported in Report Builder 1.0 that is added advantage for end user.

SSRS 2008 R2

SSRS 2008 R2 come up with additional Data Sources for Microsoft SharePoint list and Azure Databases, Parallel Data Warehouse. It provides some Add in for SharePoint integration, Reports Parts, Data visualization (Maps, Sparklines and Data Bars, and Indicators), Cache refresh plans etc. BIDS and Report Builder 3.0 were released.

SSRS 2012

Sql server 2012 provides new great features i.e. Power View. Power view Add-in for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and 2013, is an interactive data exploration, visualization, and presentation experience. It provides drag-and-drop ad hoc reporting for business users such as data analysts, business decision makers, and information workers. Reporting Services report server in SharePoint mode supports SharePoint 2013. Provide BIDS with Visual Studio 2010/2012 which is SSDT.

SSRS 2012 provide Reporting Services data alerts are a data-driven alerting solution. Interactive view reports in Apple Safari on iOS devices. We can Renderers Microsoft Word/Excel 2007-2010.Report Builder 3.0 Remain Unchanged.

These are all reporting services release versions.

Hope this helps!!

Happy learning. Enjoy learning………….

Tech #8 : Business Intelligence Software’s {Part-II}-Jaspersoft

Hello Friends,

I must be apologize to my readers for this because of my non regularities.

I will not let you down again for sure and will start boost posting again.

We are with new BI Suppliers.

Todays our supplier is Jaspersoft.

Jaspersoft:

image

Jaspersoft Business Intelligence Suite is the world’s most widely deployed Business Intelligence (BI) suite due to it’s comprehensive capabilities, flexible light weight architecture, and affordable subscription model. Jaspersoft BI Suite delivers reporting, dashboards, analysis, and data integration services for both stand-alone and embedded BI requirements. With self-serve web based design and analysis tools, users and businesses of all sizes can improve their competitiveness and decision making with Jaspersoft.

Data Integration:

Jaspersoft ETL builds integration jobs with an intuitive graphical interface to handle the smallest to the most complex data integration job definitions. In business intelligence, data integration such as ETL (extract, transform, load) services are used to create and update a data warehouse or data mart. A state-of-the-art data integration product must be able to connect to all your data sources and support graphical modeling to design multiple process flows.

Products for Data Integration:

Reporting Software:

Jaspersoft allows you to create a broad range of report types to meet the needs of different users. Some reports are relatively static and highly structured to meet corporate identity, barcode scanning or other standards. Such “pixel perfect” reports are created by a technical user or professional report designer. At the other extreme, ad hoc reports are much more dynamic, providing the business user with the data and a drag-and-drop web tool to create their own reports.

Products for Reporting Software:

Dashboards:

Jaspersoft provides a drag-and-drop design environment for creating dashboards and mashboards.Dashboards can take many forms depending on the target audience and the information to be presented. Ideally, business users should be able to assemble their own dashboards and share them with others, all without involving technical people. Mashboards (a combination of mash-up and dashboard) provides real-time information from multiple public and private data sources.

Products for Dashboards:

Analysis:

Some users want to explore data quickly, without the expense of building and managing a data warehouse. In-memory analysis is the best approach to allow these power users to slice, dice, pivot, filter, and more. Other users have more advanced analytic needs or larger data sets to analyze. These users need online analytical processing (OLAP) to gain business insight from their data warehouse or data mart.

Products for Analysis:

Business Intelligence Platform:

Jaspersoft is a state-of-the-art BI platform designed to scale and to meet the tough requirements of a wide variety of organizations and deployment models.A modern BI platform must perform a variety of functions to support the needs of a diverse user community. The platform must secure and deliver the data as it moves from the source to the data warehouse, and ultimately to the user in the form of a report or analysis view. Metadata is often used to simplify the complexity of data for self-serve BI designers and users. Finally, it must support deployment and integration into a variety of environments and delivery models.
